Google + to be closed down by the tech giant.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Apparently that is especially true when the thing coming to an end is unloved! Soon it will be time to goodbye to the not so popular Google + network.

Earlier this week the tech giant made an announcement that handed down a death sentence to the struggling platform. The word is that in less than one year the consumer facing Google + will be gone.

Google + Handed A Death Sentence

A quote from the Google announcement,

...while our engineering teams have put a lot of effort and dedication into building Google+ over the years, it has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption, and has seen limited user interaction with apps. The consumer version of Google+ currently has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds.

Unfortunately, there was a bug that shared user information - names, e-mail, address, occupation as well as gender and age with the public. The word is, this happened in spite of privacy settings being set to prevent that. Anyone using the platform should be aware of the situation.

Google reports that they will be making some changes to their user data privacy policy which will limit applications and the scope of access to user data.

 What You Should Do

1. Remove Links To Google + From Your Website

If you do that now, you'll avoid the dreaded broken links when the final day arrives. And of course there's no sense in driving any of your traffic to a platform that is going away soon.

2. Download Your Data

You can export user data before the expiration date. You have the option to select which information you want - your profile, hangouts on-air, regular hangouts, communities and even your circles.  Here's an article about that.

3. optimize your Google my business profile

While Google + may be a failure, the good news is that Google My Business is more powerful than ever. The latest tracking shows that more than 95% of consumers today are reading online reviews for local businesses. Make a commitment to start soliciting feedback and reviews from your customers to take advantage of that trend. If you join 3 Wins, there is a free training on exactly how to do that on autopilot in the 3 Wins Membership Area.

All this means that it's more important than ever that your Google My Business Profile is fully optimized and branded. This way you'll give your business every opportunity to capture that new customer before your competition does.

Act now to prevent your business from being impacted by the demise of Google +

How This Relates to Your 3 Wins Marketing Foundation

Your presence on Google + is a piece of the puzzle from the Online Foundation area of the 3 Wins Puzzle. A little more effort in that area will more than make up for the loss of your Google + profile.

3 great things to do instead of Google +

Whenever a door closes a window opens somewhere else. Here are 3 choices that can help you to continue to attract new customers to your local business.

  1. Start creating blog posts that feature content with a local focus. A great place to start is community event announcements and local news.
  2. If you're not already, take advantage of the relatively new and very powerful features that your Google my business listing offers you. Things like Google Posts and the Messaging Feature.
  3. Spend more of your time on the other social networks that your ideal customers actually visit on a regular basis. Social media is a great place to engage, build trust and community among those that you consider the best fit for your business.
